Court 02 / The game

The Rally

You are the bottom of the screen. The CPU owns the top. Keep the ball in, keep it away from the CPU and keep score the way tennis does: love, fifteen, thirty, forty, with deuce and advantage waiting to ruin your evening.

Play the game

Your browser cannot draw the court. The scoreboard and controls still work in text form.

Move: arrow keys, W A S D, or drag. Serve: Space, or tap your racket.

Mode

Real-time mode runs the ball live. If your device asks for reduced motion, the game switches to turn-based and stays still between your moves.

How the game plays

Four minutes of reading, a lifetime of excuses. Here are the house rules.

Hitting

Your racket swings by itself when the ball reaches it after one bounce. Your job is to be in the right place. Meet the ball with the left side of the racket to send it left, the right side to send it right. Crossing the ball at speed adds sidespin.

Spin

Sidespin bends the ball in the air and kicks it sideways off the clay. Sweep your racket the way you want the ball to curve. The CPU spins too, and it sets up for its own bend, so watch the shadow, not just the ball.

Safe or bold

Safe shots land comfortably inside the lines. Bold shots are faster and deeper, which wins points against a stretched opponent and loses them when you miss the line or the net. Hold Shift or press B to go bold.

Serving

The server stands behind the baseline and aims diagonally into the service box. Even points go to the right, odd points to the left. Nudge left or right before you serve to aim. Miss the box twice and you have double faulted.

Scoring

Real tennis counting

Points inside a game go love, 15, 30, 40. At 40-all it is deuce, and you must win two points in a row: first for advantage, then the game. The first side to your chosen number of games wins the match, so there is no tiebreak and no mercy.

New to all this? The scoring primer explains every call, and the tracker next to it handles a full real-world match.

The CPU is a simple program with randomised mistakes. It does not model any real player, and no real player or tournament appears anywhere on this site.

Umpire's FAQ

Why did my ball get called out?

The first bounce must land inside the singles lines and inside the baseline. The wide alley is for doubles, so in this game it counts as out. A serve must land in the correct diagonal service box.

Why did a shot hit the net?

Low, flat shots, especially bold ones, sometimes clip the tape. The net is about as tall as a ball is wide here, so give your shots a little room. The CPU nets the ball now and then too.

What does reduced motion do?

If your system asks for less motion, the live loop never starts. The court is drawn once per turn, scoreboard digits swap without flipping, and each exchange is resolved when you press the main button. You can still see the path of every shot drawn on the court.

Does it save anything?

Your best rally and win-loss record are saved in your own browser when storage is available. If storage is blocked, they live in memory until you close the tab. Nothing leaves your device.
